In writing a piece for MoneyGeek, “The Best and Cheapest Car Insurance for High-Risk Drivers,” Journalist Katy McWhirter reached out to Attorney Thomas J. Simeone for his advice as a leading auto accident attorney.

Attorney Simeone was happy to expand on a few pressing topics, the first of which being who is considered a high-risk driver in the first place.

“Driving while under the influence of alcohol (or impaired), reckless driving and speeding are most likely to cause someone to be considered a high-risk driver,” as Attorney Simeone told MoneyGeek. “However, a key factor that insurance companies look at is the number of offenses, so even failing to stop at a red light or yield the right of way can cause someone to be considered high-risk if there are several violations.”

Thus, many drivers only find out they are considered “high risk” once they are searching for an insurer and run into roadblock after roadblock. Unfortunately, insurance companies are more interested in money than anything else. That means they won’t insure someone who is, per Attorney Simeone, “likely to cause a claim”—at least not for cheap.

Attorney Simeone further explained how high-risk drivers can access cheaper insurance rates. He also shared his tips on how to get coverage when seemingly every insurance company refuses to sell you a policy.
